Sister Bear is over at Lizzy Bruin's house watching Trouble at Big Bear High--a big-cubs' video that they probably shouldn't even be looking at--in which two teen bears are having an argument. When one of them gets really really angry, he says a certain word. It's a word Sister has never heard before. At dinner that night Sister tries out this brand-new, stronger-sounding word. When Mama Bear recovers her senses, she has to explain to Sister all about a certain kind of word. It's the kind of word that nobody, not even adults and certainly not cubs, should use at any time, no matter how upset or angry they are.

Winston of Churchill: One Bear's Battle Against Global Warming

Churchill, Manitoba is the polar bear capitol of the world. Every winter, tourists flock to the tiny town to watch the bears hunt and frolic on the frozen waters of the Hudson Bay. This year, though, the tourists are in for a big surprise…Winston! A smart, fierce, brave bear, Winston of Churchill has noticed that their icy home is slowly melting away. He explains to the other bears why the ice is melting then, using the stirring words of his famous namesake, rallies the bears to convince humans to save their Arctic home. However, on the way to the protest march, Winston learns an unexpected lesson and realizes that he, too, must change his ways. This timely, funny story draws attention to the polar bears’ plight and helps children understand that in the face of global warming, everyone must do their part, no matter how small.

Paddington Treasury (Paddington Bear)

This treasury marks Paddington's 40th year in America, with a comprehensive collection of Sir Michael Bond's beloved stories. Peggy Fortnum's line drawings have been watercolored by her step-granddaughter Caroline Nuttall-Smith, who was not yet born when the books were first published. Since the Browns first discovered him at London's Paddington Station wearing a tag that read "Please look after this bear," Paddington's popularity has grown and his books have sold 25 million copies worldwide in 22 languages. The enduring appeal of this small bear from Darkest Peru ensures that he will be discovered by generations to come. Those well versed in Paddington's antics know that he does tend to make ordinary occasions more exciting. While readers of all ages may laugh as he bumbles from one near disaster to another, it is always a relief to find a happy ending.

Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?

What does a little bear wear while he romps through a bright and sunny day? In the morning, his pants that dance, and the sun on his legs that run. At lunchtime, celery crunch and sprouts in a bunch, and juice from a pear and rice in his hair.
The Honeybee & the Robber

Whether she's sipping nectar from beautiful flowers, avoiding hungry birds and fish, dancing with a butterfly, or bravely protecting her entire hive from a big bear with an even bigger appetite, this honeybee is always on the move. Eric Carle's updated classic features truly inspired feats of paper engineering, including a galloping bear and a spectacular butterfly that looks as if it will take off at any moment. There's not a gratuitous pop-up, flap, or movable piece of art in the book; readers will gasp with delight at every page, with every reading. The charming story is still a showcase for Carle's distinctive collages, in delectable golds, earthy greens, shimmering blues, and warm browns. This version is smaller than the original, and the text has been revised slightly, with younger readers in mind. A clever new interactive cover allows children to make the villain bear's eyes cross as the angry looking bee stings his nose.
Carle's bold, appealing style is known and loved by happy readers everywhere, who return again and again to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket, The Grouchy Ladybug, and his many other very popular titles.
How One Little Polar Bear Captivated The World (Knut)

When Knut was born, the first polar bear cub at the Berlin Zoo in more than thirty years, he was no bigger than a snowball and unable to care for himself. His mother, a rescued East German circus bear, didn't know how to take care of Knut and rejected him. Knut would have died if it weren't for Thomas Dorflein, a zookeeper who nurtured Knut, feeding him, sleeping with him, and giving him the love and attention Knut needed to thrive. But Thomas wasn't the only one who adopted Knut. The adorable little polar bear captured the world's attention, and now Knut is loved around the globe.

Little Bear (An I Can Read Book)

This is the first I Can Read Book ever, and the first of five classic Little Bear books, expressly designed for beginning readers. Elsa Holmelund Minarik and Maurice Sendak teamed up to create these simple stories that are deeply comforting and lovingly playful. In one story, "Birthday Soup," Little Bear cannot find his mother and presumes she has forgotten his birthday. With the prospect of guests arriving and no cake in sight, he sets out to make birthday soup (all his friends like soup). Just as the gathering is sitting down for soup, Mother Bear shows up with a big, beautiful birthday cake. "I never did forget your birthday, and I never will," she says to her son as he hugs her leg. In "Little Bear Goes to the Moon," Little Bear declares that he will fly to the moon in his new space helmet. Mother Bear tells him to be back by lunch, and he is. The gentle, teasing repartee between Little Bear and his mother will delight young readers, and the spacious layout and large type will encourage them to keep on reading! (Ages 4 to 8)

A Bear Called Paddington

Paddington first charmed American audiences forty years ago. Now a new generation will surely be won over by Paddington's particular brand of preposterous humor and gentle satire. The Browns first meet Paddington on a railway platform in London. He is sitting on a battered suitcase, wearing an odd-looking hat and a sign around his neck that reads, "Please look after this bear. Thank you." And that is just what they do, unaware that home will never be the same once Paddington becomes a member of the family.

The Three Snow Bears

Aloo-ki glances up from fishing and sees her sled dogs floating off on an ice floe. She races after them and comes upon an igloo. Being a curious girl, she goes inside only to find no one home. That’s because the polar bear family who lives there is out walking while their breakfast cools off. Aloo-ki eats some soup, tries on their boots, and finally crawls into the smallest bed for a nap. Meanwhile, Papa, Mama, and Baby Bear see her dogs adrift, swim out to rescue them and return home to find Aloo-ki fast asleep in Baby Bear’s bed.
Jan traveled to the far North to meet the Inuit people and see the amazing land where they live. Dramatic illustrations capture the shimmering ice, snow and deep blue seas of the Arctic, and when Jan adds a raven-haired Inuit girl and her appealing huskies, an endearing family of polar bears, and playful Arctic animals in the borders, the result is one of her most beautiful picture books.
The decorative Inuit patterns and clothing Jan uses throughout are sure to attract adult fans and collectors while children will want to listen to and look at this exciting version of a well-loved story over and over again.

Where Dog (a frisky daschund) is brave and boisterous, colorful stuffed animal Bear is shy, and--much like the beloved curmudgeons Frog and Toad have for generations--their playful misadventures illustrate the joys of having a best friend at your side. Young readers will delight in these clever little vignettes and marvel as they watch Dog and Bear animate each page with big, bold color and expression. Take a look at a sample of pages from Dog and Bear below--or listen to author Laura Vaccaro Seeger read from the book at the top of this page--and discover a new reading treasure that would inspire any child to plead (as Dog does to Bear), "Read to me!"

Discover Two Fantastic Friends and Three Delightful Stories in Dog and Bear

<HR class=bucketDivider noShade SIZE=1 ="/">
More to Explore

Black?
Touching Spirit Bear (rack)

Cole Matthews is angry. Angry, defiant, smug--in short, a bully. His anger has taken him too far this time, though. After beating up a ninth-grade classmate to the point of brain damage, Cole is facing a prison sentence. But then a Tlingit Indian parole officer named Garvey enters his life, offering an alternative called Circle Justice, based on Native American traditions, in which victim, offender, and community all work together to find a healing solution. Privately, Cole sneers at the concept, but he's no fool--if it gets him out of prison, he'll do anything. Ultimately, Cole ends up banished for one year to a remote Alaskan island, where his arrogance sets him directly in the path of a mysterious, legendary white bear. Mauled almost to death, Cole awaits his fate and begins the transition from anger to humility.
Ben Mikaelsen's depiction of a juvenile delinquent's metamorphosis into a caring, thinking individual is exciting and fascinating, if at times heavy-handed. Cole's nastiness and the vivid depictions of the lengths he must go to survive after the (equally vivid) attack by the bear are excruciating at times, but the concept of finding a way to heal a whole community when one individual wrongs another is compelling. The jacket cover photo of the author in a bear hug with the 700-pound black bear that he and his wife adopted and raised is definitely worth seeing! (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Bear Snores On

On a cold windy night, an itty-bitty mouse "pitter-pat, tip-toe, creep-crawls" into a sleeping bear's cozy lair, looking for relief from the bitter winter weather. Soon he is joined by a veritable menagerie of woodland animals, and the party begins. Popping corn, brewing tea, tweeting, and chatting, the critters enjoy themselves thoroughly while the bear slumbers through it all. Until, that is, an errant pepper flake from the simmering stew wakes him up with a giant sneeze. As the bear goes from ferocious snarls and rumbles to pitiful whimpers, his uninvited guests realize what the problem is.
You've snuck in my lair
and you've all had fun!
But me? I was sleeping
and...
I have had none!

Not to worry. Mouse knows just what to do.
First-time author Karma Wilson and artist Jane Chapman (illustrator of Phyllis Root's One Duck Stuck) have created a charming little tale of sharing and caring that will have readers of all ages cheering at the humorous finale.

Kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk go the blueberries into the pail of a little girl named Sal who--try as she might--just can't seem to pick as fast as she eats. Robert McCloskey's classic is a magical tale of the irrepressible curiosity--not to mention appetite--of youth. Sal and her mother set off in search of blueberries for the winter at the same time as a mother bear and her cub. A quiet comedy of errors ensues when the young ones wander off and absentmindedly trail the wrong mothers.
Blueberries for Sal--with its gentle animals, funny noises, and youthful spirit of adventure--is perfect for reading aloud. The endearing illustrations, rendered in dark, blueberry-stain blue, will leave you craving a fresh pail of your own. (Picture book)
